According to the government plan, a new festival begins each month. In January, it was the Kending Wind-Bell Festival, which attracted tourists to the blustery Hengchun Peninsula. Carrying homemade wind chimes that produced soothing tinkles in the area’s gusty winds, tourists looked on as professional artists made wind-bells out of all manner of materials. The festival was successful in making the peninsula almost as big a tourist draw during its inclement winter months as it is during the seasonal summer months, which are blessed with beach weather.

By February, it is time for the lantern festival. For many years, the Taipei Lantern Festival has been sponsored by the ROC Tourism Bureau and has featured an exhibition of large lanterns made in the shape of the animal of the year according to the Chinese zodiac. The festival is widely celebrated throughout Taiwan, and until two years ago, the center of celebrations was in the nation’s capital of Taipei. The government decided that, to help balance regional tourism development, those celebrations would be relocated to the southern city of Kaohsiung. This year, the main festivities were held in central Taiwan’s Taichung. Still, every town and city celebrates the lantern festival in its own unique way. On the 15 th day of the first lunar month, temples and other public places throughout the island are alive with revelers enjoying the new-year atmosphere.

In March, the government is promoting the festivities celebrating the birthday of Guanyin, the goddess of mercy worshiped in Neimen Township’s Tzuchu Temple. The temple is the township’s religious center, and locals perform in front of it to entertain and thank the goddess. Today, it is also a must-see tourism event for those interested in Taiwanese culture. This year, it will be held March 15-23.

This year’s Taiwan Tea Expo will be held April 6-15 in Taipei County’s Pinglin Township. The production and preparation of tea has been developed so intensely in Taiwan that it has become almost an art form – one that is part of the daily life of just about every Taiwanese.

The Sanyi Wood Carving Festival will be held May 17-25 in Miaoli County’s Sanyi Township. A town noted for its craftsmanship in wood. In addition to an artist’s studio, there are shops where tourists can buy animal figures, objects and human figures carved from wood.

The Dragon Boat Festival is also a widely celebrated festival in Taiwan. The ROC Tourism Bureau selected the races in Erlong Village of Ilan County, the Dajia Riverside Park in Taipei City, Bitan in Taipei County and Lugang Township in Changhua County as worthy of promotion. Though not held at exactly the same time, they all take place around the beginning of the June.

The International Children’s Folklore and Folkgame Festival is July’s main event. Taking place from the fifth of that month until August 17, the festival will attract kids and parents to Ilan County’s Dongshan River. Each year, foreigners and locals alike swarm to the water park to feel young at heart. It has become so successful that other county governments in Taiwan have tried to use the same formula and set up their own water-related activities for children. The festival has brought a huge economic benefit to the county, effectively pairing tourism with Ilan’s other main earner, agriculture.

Many people look forward every year to the Taipei Chinese Food Festival, held August 7-10 at the Taipei World Trade Center. Not only does the renowned food fair feature traditional Chinese cuisine, but it also introduces innovative new dishes every year.

The seventh lunar month of every year is known in Chinese communities as Ghost Month. It is a time when wandering phantoms and hungry ghosts are placated by the living. This year, the Keelung (Jilong) Ghost Festival, which takes place August 18-September 17, will be the recipient of government promotional efforts to increase tourism. In addition to the traditional Chinese view of ghosts, organizers will also focus on an array of international beliefs relating to the spiritual world. There are also plans for music and dance numbers performed by groups from several countries. (adapted from news of Taiwan Review)

A report shows the traditional attitude of placing boys before girls and keeping women strictly in the home has been disappearing and that women are now commonly receiving higher education.

Among Asian nations, Taiwan leads the way in the number of women receiving advanced education, with results close to those of the United States and New Zealand. Moreover, the figures in Taiwan are well above those for Japan and South Korea.

For every 1,000 females in Taiwan’s population, 55.8 receive higher education,

compared with 52.5 males. In Japan, the numbers are 27.2 females per thousand, compared to 35.8 males; not only are males clearly receiving more higher education than females, but also Japanese women have a much lower rate of higher education than women in Taiwan.

In South Korea, 41.8 women per thousand receive higher education, compared to 70 males; this reveals a much greater bias against women and reflects the social inequality in educational opportunity in that society.

In 2001, Taiwan’s illiteracy rate was 1.4 percent for men and 7.1 percent for women. The higher rate of female illiteracy is largely because elderly woman make up a relatively large proportion of the population. With the greater equality in schooling that has been the norm for years, however, the discrepancy between illiteracy for men and women will disappear.

Plagiarism is defined as “copying” or “using someone else’s work.” There are many kinds of plagiarism affecting students today. Plagiarism happens when a student copies somebody else’s work instead of doing his own writing. It also happens in those cases where people actually purchase essays instead of doing the work themselves. Schools, colleges, and universities regard this as a serious offense (equivalent to cheating on an examination), and they often have strict penalties for anyone found guilty—including expulsion from school. Most students call this “cheating” or “copying”, and they know it is wrong.

Plagiarism is easy to recognize; there are a number of related actions which

may be defined as “plagiarism.” One example is when a student copies directly from a

textbook or reference work, and copies word-for-word without using quotation marks

and footnotes. As a rule of thumb, copying more than three words in row from another

author ( without acknowledgement of the author) counts as plagiarism. If a student

wishes to use another author’s ideas from a published work, such as a book,

magazine, or journal, he must make a footnote and mention the author’s name.

Another example of plagiarism is when a student downloads entire sentences,

paragraphs or pages of text from the Internet, and turns them in to the teacher as his

own writing. It is also illegal to download or copy pictures, charts, diagrams, or

photographs without acknowledging the website or source from which it was taken.

In academic writing assignments, use of quotations or data from the work of

others is a common practice, and is often very valuable provided that the source of the

quotation is clearly documented. Failure to provide a source or put quotation marks

around material that is taken from elsewhere gives the appearance that the comments

are one’s own. When quoting word-for-word from the work of another person

quotation marks or indenting (setting the quotation in from the margin) must be used

and the source of the quoted material must be acknowledged.

A)    website
